Despite its popularity today, plaid (Tartan - the actual pattern) was once forbidden as it served as a sign of rebellion during the 18th Century. Plaid regained its popularity in the 19th century, though and hasn't missed a beat since.
The checked pattern that makes up plaid has adorned most every type of apparel. In fact, at one point, wearing a formal plaid gown was admired.
