Flamingos are taking this spring by storm. Here in Tribeca, it's a style we cannot ignore. Whether it's brightly hued pinks imitating flamingo features or prints which show the flamboyant animal, designers and brands are flocking to this trend. This season, flamingos are in!
Flamingos are fun and unique in the wild as much as they are on swimsuits. Here are some fun flamingo facts:
- Flamingos are named after the Latin word "flamenco" which means fire for the birds' bright colored feathers.
- Flamingos actually aren't born pink. Chicks are born gray or white and take up to three years to reach their mature iconic color they are known for.
- Flamingos' diet are high in carotenoids, which make their feathers pink or orange. Carrots also contain a lot of carotenoids. If you ate a diet of all carrots your skin would turn orange-hued!
- Flamingo are social animals and travel in flocks; these groups can sometimes grow to 1 million flamingos in one flock.
